The cutting and slashing in Washington continues. The latest awful thing to be found within the current budget proposals is the EPA is planning to ditch funding for lead safety programs, which in particular would affect, all of us, but more specifically protect children from lead exposure. While it is something we should be deeply concerned about lets be clear, int his instance it is cutting funding for education and training of removal of toxic metal substances – lead-based paint. There are so many things that are wrong with this on so many different levels and is an excellent illustration of once again the disastrous thinking that motivates our new government. The program represents only $16 million and maybe 100 full time employees. This is hardly cutting away legislative pork. The dangers of lead paint and other toxic metals are something that we are all fully aware of and know the dangers of, both to individuals and to the environment. Getting rid of this program is quite literally turning back the clock on basic progress and well being. It’s shameful.
In the original article posted at Think Progress it was noted that the responsibility would be shifted back on to States, which might sort of sound ok until one realizes that very few States actually have any program that can take up the slack.
This is not the way to save a few pennies.
