It was maybe a few weeks ago that we first came across this story from Kate Krader on CNN, lamenting the closing of a slew of classic New York City restaurants, among them Union Square Café, Bobby Flay’s Mesa Grill and Pastis to name but three. Many of us here have lived in NYC most of our lives, although maybe not natives and wholeheartedly agree with Krader’s suggestion that certain restaurants and other neighborhood institutions should be given landmark status, not just in NYC but in any and all cities. Neighborhoods and the cultures that create them are the fabric of our lives in large urban environments that sometimes can seem too homogenized. And of course for many people this is the way that we first discover different cultures… losing these restaurants is indeed a travesty, that should be addressed.
