It’s our understanding that this is what is called progress. Yes we all knew it was going to happen and there was certainly ample warning given. The Waldorf Astoria has officially closed for renovations. On the one hand the famed hotel definitely needed it, property was beginning to look quite dated and a little shabby, although, on the other hand that was also part of its charm. It’s absolutely true that when people say “they don’t make ‘em like they used to”.
The renovation is planned to take two to three years, while a good part of the building will remain as a hotel, many of the room will be converted to condo apartments.
At least for the time being we’re going to hold our breath and hope for the best. The building itself is landmarked, so at least that will remain, we’ll see what happens with the interiors and of course with the cultural change within the property itself. Will it maintain some of its slightly stodgy, yet still glamorous pedigree, or will its life be sucked dry rinsed and bleached away.
