The preparations for Art Basel Miami are well underway, in fact have been for the past few weeks, walking the beach the tents are slowly popping up, the buzz is already in the air, locals and snow birds alike are chattering about which friends, colleagues, clients are coming in to town, which events, opening and parties who is going to. The regular folk who call Miami home are already feeling the pressure, traffic this year is already grinding to a halt is some places and hour to cut through downtown, half an hour to get across the MacAurthur. We have a love hate relationship with Art Basel, on the one hand it’s clearly great for the economy, the first few years of the show were exciting and fun… now it seems that it become more of an occasion for people to simply come south earlier, for the local restaurants and businesses to become less tolerant. The crowds become more extreme. In many ways, art and culture have become a Vegas side show. Not that any of this is a bad thing, but if you have yet to attend an Art Basel in Miami, just know what you’re in for, if you wanted something of cultured experience of casual, but intense artistic consumption, forget it, this is a who a high powered, fast paced scene, and unless you are int he know, likely you will be left out in the lurch – which is good for simply hitting the beach.
